A plant that got masked by a cheaper substitute

For generations, families traditionally grew Kasthuri Turmeric (Curcuma aromatica) in their homesteads and used it in traditional skin care. Over time, a cheaper substitute, Zedoary or Manja Koova (Curcuma zedoaria), began to be sold in its place. Traders passed it off under the same name, and the genuine crop slowly disappeared from farms and markets.

Bringing it back

Our founders spent their careers in horticulture. Two of them served as Professors at Kerala Agricultural University, where research, including DNA fingerprinting, established how to identify genuine Kasthuri Turmeric from its cheaper substitute.

Since 2018, we have worked to put that knowledge to use. We grow the genuine crop, encourage farmers to cultivate it, and help people recognise the real plant by its leaf characteristics, cream–coloured rhizomes and distinctive camphoraceous aroma.

How we make our products

Our Kasthuri Turmeric Powder is made the traditional way. The rhizomes are cleaned, sliced, sun-dried and ground, and nothing is added.

You can see the difference when you open the pack: a cream, wheat-bran coloured powder, not the bright yellow of the substitute.
